It is, however, okay to have an antivirus program and an antimalware program installed on your computer at the same time, without having to worry about potential conflicts. While you may be able to "get away" with having multiple antivirus programs on your computer simultaneously, there could be situations where they could potentially conflict with each other - something that may cause issues like false-positive results, etc. Like /u/smartfon suggested, it would probably be a better idea to purchase a subscription to a well-known antivirus program, rather than having multiple antivirus programs installed on your computer.

So, my question is, can I combine Windows Defender, Avast, and Malwarebytes and not have them interfere with each other/my system? And, of course, will they be enough coverage for a reasonably internet-savvy person? I'm also planning on using AdBlock and the like. I've also heard Malwarebytes recommended a lot, but my impression is that the free version focuses almost exclusively on malware and ought to be combined with something. Since I'm using Avast on my tablet, I'm leaning towards that just because it's familiar and it seems to have good ratings (although people have complained about the pop-ups, which it sounds like you might have the option of quieting?). I've checked out other threads and keep seeing Avast, AVG, and Bitdefender recommended.
In the past, I've used Norton and never had a problem with it (that I know of), though I'd prefer not to pay anything this time around. My understanding is that Windows 8.1 comes with its own "Windows Defender" program, but the general consensus is it's not that great. I just got a Lenovo Flex 2 with Windows 8.1, and I'd like to install some antivirus/whatnot programs.
